CRU History
CRU was established in 1999 by a group known as the 'Working Group of CRU.' This group was made up of a cross section of youth from E.D. Feehan, Bedford Road, Mount Royal, youth who were not in school, and representation from various agencies, including the Saskatoon Health Region and the Youth Resource Centre. A location in Estey School (now Royal West Campus) was donated in kind to CRU by the Saskatoon Public School Board. Immediately following, a Coordinator was hired by the youth who were involved in the Wellness Centre's inception.
In 1999, the CRU Youth Wellness Centre was awarded funding for a period of a maximum of five years from the Advisory Committee on Family Planning to the Minister of Health. In 2004, we entered our fifth and final year of funding.
The CRU Youth Wellness Centre was pleased to receive funding in 2005 from Canadian Heritage's Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre Initiative (UMAYC) which allowed us to continue and to enhance our previous programming. CRU applies on a yearly basis to obtain UMAYC funding.
In June of 2007 CRU had to find new space to run programming. Nutana Collegiate offered space to CRU including office, gym, programming and kitchen access. Mount Royal Collegiate also supported CRU by offering space for CRU to provide programming on a weekly basis.
